Age Details – Is the Little One Just About to Turn Two or Is He/She Going on Three?

A baby that is about to turn two is at a completely different level than a toddler who is already two and will be three soon.

They are at different developmental stages, which means that you need to make sure you choose something that is appropriate for his or her level.

  • Turning 2. Stick to toys that manufacturers recommend for ages 1-3, as they will be most relevant to little ones just turning two.

On that note, however, try to avoid gifts that won’t last very long because baby will outgrow them. Sometimes it’s hard to do this, but in general, the best toys for 2-year-olds will interest them for at least a year or more.

  • Already 2. You have a bit more freedom in the gift department when shopping for a little one who is already two. Depending on the child’s development and skill levels, you might even be able to get something recommended for ages 3 and up, especially if the two-year-old won’t be two for much longer.

Type of Toy

The choices are endless and narrowing down the choices to just 10 for this guide was extremely difficult for our experts! There are so many awesome toys, and some will even make you wish you were two again.

Here are a few types of toys that two-year-olds typically enjoy the most.

  • Play Kitchen. Play kitchens are great for both genders and allow little ones to role-play.
  • Something with Wheels. They will learn to balance better when they have some toddler-friendly wheels to roll around on, and they will also be more to ride a bike or use skates when they get a little older.
  • Baby Dolls. Toddlers who play with baby dolls immerse themselves in nurturing skills, something that is important for both boys and girls to learn.
  • Push Toys. For little ones who still aren’t steady on the feet, a push toy is a great way to help them perfect their balance. Once they do get the hang of it, they will also enjoy pushing toys around on their daily adventures.
  • STEM Toys. Science, technology, engineering, and math. Aren’t these topics more appropriate for older kids?

No way! The sooner you can introduce these topics to your kids, the better; the important thing is to choose an age appropriate toy that will keep them engaged. Of course, if you choose something too advanced, kids will feel frustrated and lose interest quickly, but we have a great STEM toy on our list that 2-year-olds love.

We will be discussing it in our “Review” section next!

5 Best Toys for 2-Year-Olds Reviews

Toy shopping is difficult because not all kids have the same interests. We included a wide range of options on our list, and while we consider these to be some of the best toys for 2-year-olds, not everyone will agree.

Read our expert’s opinions on each one, and if you are still not convinced that they are the right one for the little one you’re shopping for, head back up to the table to check out the other five options we included.

1. Prince Lionheart Wheely Bug

These cute wheels from Price Lionheart are perfect for a two-year-old toddler.

We choose the small version since it is suitable for little ones 18 months and older, but since we know that kids will outgrow it quickly, we also wanted to be sure and mention that it comes in a larger size. The manufacturer recommends that one for toddlers age 3 and up, so if you want a toy for a 2-year-old who will soon be three, consider getting that one. It also comes in more versions, including a cow, lady bug, bee, hedgehog, tiger, and piggy!

It can accommodate up to 50 pounds of weight and toddlers have a blast rolling around the home on these cute wheels. If you have carpet, you might need to use it outdoors or in a garage, but on hard wood or tile, they’ll enjoy scooting around for hours.

2. Manhattan Toy Baby Stella Peach

Stella is an incredibly popular baby doll for babies and toddlers since she is so soft and cuddly.

The eyes present no safety hazards since they are made of thread rather than hard plastic, and she is sewn together well. Her diaper is removable, and so is her one-piece outfit that closes with Velcro. Her pacifier (not attached to her body) has a little magnet in it that allows it to stick to her mouth since there is another magnet behind her smile.

One of the great things about this baby doll is that it comes in other ethnicities and even a little boy version.

If you’re worried that getting a doll for a baby boy isn’t appropriate, don’t be. As we mentioned, teaching children nurturing skills is important, and this baby doll will teach them about loving and caring for others.

3. Little Tikes T-Ball Set

Introduce kids to sports at a young age, and you just might be raising the future pitcher for the New York Yankees!

A T-Ball set is great for kids who like to play outdoors and prefer being active to sitting down with a STEM toy. Both toys offer benefits to children, and we think they are both important, but it’s OK if kids have preferences.

Toys like this are great for both genders and can be used indoors or outdoors. The fact that it is so versatile makes it a great toy and the bat is light enough for a toddler to hold it with ease. We highly recommend this one as a birthday present so that all of the kids at the party will have something to do when the birthday boy or girl opens it!

4. AppleRound Blue Horse Hopper

The Blue Horse Hopper is similar to the Wheely Bug, minus the wheels. Kids have a blast hopping around the house or the yard on this fun little friend, and you will love that he is stable enough to hold your 2-year-old.

Many parents are concerned about hazardous materials these days, be we’re happy to report that this is free from phthalates and conforms to certain EU and US safety standards. It’s a great little toy!

You will have to inflate it once it arrives, but there is a pump, so you won’t have to make your head spin by blowing it up yourself.

If you don’t want a blue horse, that’s OK! It comes in other fun colors like green, orange, and red.

5. Kids First Automobile Engineer Kit

If you prefer something a little more educational, opt for this fun kit from Kids First.

Kids are never too young to learn about engineering, and we all know how much fun it is for them to put things together. True, it can be frustrating to impatient toddlers, but if you see that they are frustrated, step in and give them a hand and teach them a little bit of patience.

This is a great toy that will help introduce simple engineering skills and concepts to toddlers. We liked their automobile kit, but they also make an airplane kit, boat kit, robot kit, and a science lab.

It is so important to teach kids the importance of STEM subjects at an early age, and with a toy like this, you’re getting them off to a great start in life.
